Polish farmers blocked a major highway with Germany on Sunday in their latest protest against European Union (EU) regulations and taxes.
Farmers across Europe have been protesting for weeks against what they say are overly restrictive environmental regulations, competition from cheap imports from non-EU countries, and low incomes.
On Sunday, farmers from Poland blocked the A2 highway east of the border with Germany.
"The blockade started at 1:00 p.m. Both sides of the A2 highway are blocked," said Ewa Murmylo, spokeswoman for the local police.
The farmers had initially planned a 25-day blockade, but after talks with local representatives, businesses and transporters, decided on a shorter blockade.
They have decided to "unblock the road maybe tomorrow" Monday, said Dariusz Wrobel, one of the farmers and organizers of the protest.
"It will depend on things that we cannot predict. We have to start taking ourselves seriously," he told AFP.
On Monday, EU Agriculture Ministers are expected to meet in Brussels.
They are expected to talk about the new proposals of the European Commission to change the regulations that have caused great dissatisfaction among farmers.
Farmers in Poland say they are targeting the European Union's so-called Green Deal on energy, transport and taxes. This agreement, according to the bloc, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Farmers in particular have been hit by increased taxes and other regulations.
Polish farmers had also protested on the border with Ukraine, worsening relations between these two countries, despite the fact that Warsaw is a big supporter of Kiev in its fight against Russian occupation./ REL
