Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, along with most of his cabinet, has been on a series of intensive visits to the southeast of the country, including the cities of Niš, Gadžin Han, Aleksinac and Ražanj. The region, historically considered a stronghold of support for the ruling SNS party, is now facing a significant decline in support, forcing the leadership to react with a direct presence on the ground. Political analysts say it is a systematic attempt to stop voter swings and reassert control in traditionally pro-government areas.
According to experts who spoke to Danas, the recent visits are not primarily focused on bridging the economic gap between the south and north of the country, although Vučić did not mince words about the development priorities. The main goal is to stop the fragile trends of SNS support, especially in Niš, where the opposition has mobilized a significant base of protests and political opposition. This also includes hot local issues that have opened up opportunities for protest elections and the avoidance of traditional electorates.
Since the visits, some political analysts have drawn stark comparisons. They argue that the strategy presented by Vučić and his staff appears to be a “show of force” to avoid the perception of political weakening in the territory that was once considered a guarantee of his votes. According to them, this move aims to discipline local structures, calm down “wobblers” and prevent a domino effect of losing support in other areas.
