Hungary's new government is expected to open the historical archives of the communist-era secret police, a step considered important for transparency and review of the past.

The news was confirmed by Bálint Ruff, who is expected to take over as chief of staff of incoming Prime Minister Péter Magyar. In an interview with the “Valasz Online” portal, he described this process as the “main task” of his mandate.

" This is a mission for historians, but I will make sure that the next government creates the necessary conditions to carry it out, guaranteeing research free from political pressures ," said Ruff, who is a lawyer and political advisor.

Péter Magyar, the winner of the parliamentary elections, is expected to be sworn in as prime minister on May 9. His center-right Tisza party managed to defeat the party of current Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the April 12 elections, promising to return Hungary to the European course, revive the economy and unlock European Union funds.

Unlike countries like Poland or the Czech Republic, Hungary has never officially published the names of its communist-era secret police collaborators. However, over the years, some names have become public through the media.

Currently, individuals have the right to access their personal files, but cannot see materials related to other people, including former whistleblowers.
