Shipping companies are still cautious about sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, despite claims from Iran that it has reopened "fully" today.
The impacts of the Iran war have been felt globally, because oil and many key products pass through this crucial waterway, and these effects will not abate until shipping companies feel safe to pass through again.
-Knut Arild Hareide, executive director of the Norwegian Shipowners' Association, said that the situation still remains delicate, also due to the presence of mines in Hormuz.
"If this represents a step towards an opening, it is a welcome development. However, the situation remains unresolved, with a number of unresolved uncertainties, including questions related to the presence of naval mines, applicable Iranian conditions and practical implementation. These aspects will need to be clarified before any transit can be assessed ," Hareide said.
The shipping company Hapag-Lloyd said they are refraining from crossing the Strait, as they are currently assessing the situation and potential risks.
" We are now starting to assess the new situation and the risks involved. Therefore, for the time being, we are still refraining from passing through the strait ," said shipping company Hapag-Lloyd.
Arsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, said they are verifying the news of the opening of Hormuz with what is happening on the ground.
"We are currently verifying the latest announcement regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, in terms of its compatibility with freedom of navigation for all commercial vessels and safe passage ," Dominguez said.
