US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States makes a clear distinction between the Iranian people and the country's leadership, while expressing hope for political change in Tehran.
" The people of Iran are extraordinary. The problem is those who lead them ," Rubio said in an interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "Good Morning America."
He added that a shift toward more pragmatic leadership would be a positive development globally, but warned that Washington is also preparing for other scenarios. “ If new people with a more sensible vision for the future come to power, that would be good news for the whole world. But we need to be prepared if that doesn’t happen ,” he said.
Rubio said the US has had indirect contact with Iranian figures through intermediaries in an attempt to assess the possibility of internal changes. He stressed that messages have been exchanged and that some of these figures have expressed constructive positions in private conversations, however it remains unclear whether they have real authority to act.
Regarding the military operations, Rubio stated that they are aimed at weakening Iran's military capabilities, including its naval fleet, missile launch systems and defense industry. He stressed that the operations are proceeding according to plan and that the objectives are expected to be achieved within a few weeks.
Rubio also stressed that the US will not allow Iran to control the Strait of Hormuz, calling such a scenario unacceptable. He added that President Donald Trump has several options available to respond in this regard.
