Russian President Vladimir Putin's loyal ally Dmitry Medvedev says Donald Trump is on a "war path" with Russia following US sanctions.
Medvedev said that the US is Russia's enemy and that "peacemaker" Donald Trump is now fully on the path of war against Russia.
"If any of the many commentators still had any illusions about the war, here they are. The United States is our adversary, and their talkative "peacemaker" has now fully embarked on the path of war against Russia. Yes, he does not always actively fight on the side of Kiev, but this is his conflict now, not old Biden's! They, of course, will say that they could not stand by and do nothing, like put pressure on Russia. This does not change the main point, the decisions taken are an act of war against Russia. And now Trump has completely attacked Europe, crazy about Russia," Medvedev wrote in a reaction on Telegram.
He also stressed that Russia's path to victory is the destruction of Ukraine and not the making of "meaningless agreements."
The Trump administration on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies, while calling on Moscow to agree to an immediate ceasefire in the war with Ukraine.
President Donald Trump had signaled for weeks that he might impose sanctions on Russia for continuing the war, but had stopped short of taking major punitive measures until Wednesday. The announcement came a day after Trump said a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest would be postponed indefinitely.
"Every time I talk to Vladimir, I have good conversations and then they go nowhere. They just go nowhere," President Donald Trump said, after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to discuss peace negotiations.
In comments in the Oval Office, Trump explained that he “felt the time had come” for the sanctions, noting that he “waited a long time” to impose them. However, the US president said he hopes “they won’t last long” because the war will end.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement Wednesday that it was "time to stop the killing and for an immediate ceasefire."
