Serbia receives another batch of weapons from Russia, despite international

Serbia received another batch of weapons from its ally Russia, despite international sanctions against Moscow due to its aggression in Ukraine.

Serbia's populist President Aleksandar Vucic on Wednesday unveiled a Russian electronic drone jamming system known as Repellent, which he recently said "is in our hands".

The new weapons were presented in the town of Nis in southern Serbia on the eve of Serbia's citizenship day, which is celebrated on Thursday.

“This is Repellent. It's not as strong as Krasukha, but it's excellent," President Vučić said, referring to a Russian electronic warfare system.

The weapons arrived in Serbia several months ago, although its airspace is almost entirely surrounded by NATO member states that have agreed to Western sanctions against Russia.

Serbia is the only European country that has refused to join the European Union sanctions following Russia's aggression in Ukraine two years ago. It is also the only European country that continues to sign cooperation agreements with Moscow.

Serbia has been told that if it wants to join the EU, it must respect the sanctions.

Most of the Serbian military armaments come from Russia, but also from China as well as some European arms and aircraft manufacturers.

Most of the Serbian president's statements about potential threats have centered around Kosovo, which declared independence after NATO intervened to stop a bloody crackdown on Albanians by Serbian forces in 1999.

"If someone tried to carry out an aggression against Serbia as it happened in 1999, technically they would not be able to do it in the same way," said the Serbian president. "They would have to attack from outside, from a distance, from the Adriatic Sea or the Mediterranean, with missiles." / VOA
