From sending troops into Democratic-run cities to manipulating federal institutions, the former president is concentrating power like never before.
If these developments were to occur in Latin America, international reports would talk about a president who, after securing control of the capital, sends troops to other opposition-held cities under the pretext of restoring order. There would also be mention of the fact that security services arrest political opponents, while armed and masked men abduct citizens from the streets.
But this is not happening in some foreign regime, but in the United States of America. Donald Trump, with steady steps towards an authoritarian style, is normalizing the concentration of power. Many minimize the risk, avoiding alarmist language, while his actions are so brazen that they are often perceived as unbelievable, as if they do not represent a real threat.
The facts are undeniable. Today, more than 2,000 National Guard troops patrol the streets of Washington, D.C., even as violent crime rates have fallen to a 30-year low. Trump warns that Chicago and Baltimore are next, and in June he sent the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles to quell protests against his immigration policies, calling them “uprisings.” The cities targeted are mostly Democratic strongholds with large African-American populations, potentially centers of resistance to his rule.
At its core, the logic that drives him is total control. Trump has declared war on the media, the courts, universities, and the federal bureaucracy. Last week, FBI agents raided the home and office of John Bolton, his former national security adviser and fierce critic. He has also targeted former Governor Chris Christie. Trump has also attempted to remove Federal Reserve Board member Lisa Cook on unfounded charges, a move that defies American law and the tradition of central bank independence. In essence, he is using state institutions to go after political opponents.
The goal is clear: to strengthen personal power. Faced with declining economic polls, Trump aims to take control of interest rates himself, bypassing the Fed. Supporters like JD Vance justify this with the argument that the president embodies the will of the people, so any authority should be centered around him. This is the essence of authoritarianism.

Kjo është Amerika e sotme, e cila, sipas shumë analistëve, po shndërrohet në një regjim të ngjashëm me atë të Hungarisë së Viktor Orbanit. Problemi më i madh është se si brenda vendit, ashtu edhe jashtë, pak e thonë hapur. Aleatët ndërkombëtarë, përfshirë BE-në dhe Britaninë e Madhe, vazhdojnë të veprojnë sikur gjithçka është normale, për të mos pranuar faktin se bota mund të përballet me një SHBA që po shkon drejt autokracisë.
