The High Representative of the EU for foreign policy and security, Josep Borrell, has stated that several countries of the European Union are planning to recognize a new Palestinian state at the UN meeting on May 21, this year.
According to Borell, May 21 is the day when Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and several other member countries would recognize the state of Palestine, which according to him is a symbolic act of a political nature, with the will for that state to exist.
"This is a symbolic action of a political nature. More than recognizing a state, this is about the will for that state to exist," said Borrell.
The Spanish radio RNE also reports that Borell has let it be understood that Belgium will also follow this step of the leading countries for the recognition of Palestine.
We recall that in March of this year, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, declared that Spain and Ireland, together with Slovenia and Malta, had agreed to take the first steps towards the recognition of a Palestinian state alongside the Israeli state, underlining that the solution with two states is essential for long-term peace.
Calls for a cease-fire and for a permanent end to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict have increased, especially after the increasing number of civilian casualties, as a result of Israel's war in the Gaza Strip against Hamas, the group declared a terrorist by the US and the EU.
On the other hand, Israel has said that the plans for the recognition of Palestine amount to terrorism and that this would limit the possibilities of resolving the conflict in Gaza through talks.
The General Assembly of the United Nations is expected to support the request of the Palestinians to become a full member state of the UN, and send it to the Security Council for reconsideration of this matter positively, this Friday.
Ireland's state broadcaster RTE reported on Thursday that Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Malta have been waiting for the UN vote and are considering recognizing it together on May 21.
Earlier this week, Slovenia's prime minister, Robert Golob, said his country would recognize Palestinian statehood by June.
The State of Palestine has so far been recognized by 139 countries out of 193 member countries of the United Nations Organization./ REL
