Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says Europe will be “left behind” if Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin meet to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. Orban told Hungarian state television that “if the Russian-American summit takes place, that is good, because then peace can finally prevail. But the Europeans will be left out; we will be left out of addressing the security issues of our continent.”
Orban called for a Russian-European summit on the war in Ukraine to be held "as soon as possible."
Instead of EU leaders, such negotiations should be conducted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron "on behalf of Europe," the Hungarian prime minister continued. Orban is considered Putin's closest partner in the EU, and he still maintains friendly relations with Moscow.
Meanwhile, officials from the United States, Ukraine and several European countries will meet in the United Kingdom this weekend to reach a common position before Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump meet.
