The US State Department has condemned the parliamentary elections held in Belarus, calling them fake, held in an atmosphere of fear and in conditions of non-respect of democratic procedures.
DASH's response noted that President Alexander Lukashenko's regime continues to hold over 1,400 political prisoners and that all independent political figures are banned or exiled from Belarus. It is further stated that all independent Belarusian political parties have been denied registration in the elections.
DASH also claims that the Belarusian authorities prevented the OSCE from observing the elections, which further limited the transparency necessary for free and fair elections.
" The United States condemns the fraudulent parliamentary and local elections of the Lukashenko regime that ended today in Belarus. The elections took place in a climate of fear in which no electoral process could be called democratic. The regime continues to hold more than 1,400 political prisoners. All independent political figures have either been arrested or exiled. All independent political parties were denied registration.
Belarusians abroad can only vote if they return to Minsk, where they are likely to face reprisals. These abuses have effectively frozen real political activities and discourse within Belarus. The regime prevented the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe from observing the election, further limiting the transparency that is essential for free and fair elections.
The United States recognizes the strength, resilience, and courage of Belarus' civil society and democratic movement, which demand a voice in shaping their country's future. The United States again calls on the Lukashenko regime to end its repression, release all political prisoners, and open dialogue with its political opponents. The Belarusian people deserve better ," the statement said.
