Four police officers were killed and four others were wounded after a shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a suspect was found dead, state police said Monday.
The incident happened in a residence in Charlotte, while officers during an operation arrested a person.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Chief Johnny Jennings said at a news conference that the three officers who were killed were part of a federal team made up of officers from multiple agencies.
"Today is an absolutely tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for law enforcement. Today we lost heroes working to keep our community safe," he said.
The slain officers had gone to arrest an ex-convict for illegal weapons possession. They arrived at the apartment where the suspect was located and he opened fire on the officers.
After neutralizing the attacker, the police entered the house, where, however, they were shot by another person.
Mr Jennings said at least one of them was believed to have fired at the officers. In addition to the three officers killed, Jennings said four members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department who went to the scene were shot. One officer is in critical condition, the other three are in stable condition.
