Another powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia this morning, the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 178 kilometers from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of the region, where the tremors were felt strongly, causing several buildings to collapse. So far, no casualties have been reported, according to Russian emergency authorities.
The quake comes just a day after the strongest tremors ever recorded on the Kamchatka Peninsula, which was followed by over 100 other tremors with magnitudes above 5.0. The seismic activity has also triggered a tsunami, leading to tsunami warnings across the Kuril Islands region.
Tsunami warnings have also been issued in Japan, while a threat of large waves has been declared along the entire eastern Pacific coast.
According to data, tsunami waves, which reached up to two meters in height, have reached the coast of Peru in South America and have also reached Easter Island (Rapa Nui), where they are not considered dangerous.
In Chile, authorities began evacuating people from coastal areas as a precaution against the risk of a tsunami. Monitoring of the situation continues in many countries along the Pacific.
