Shortly after European foreign ministers met with their Iranian counterparts in a conversation that lasted several hours on Friday, Donald Trump declared: "Iran does not want to talk to Europe."
Trump further reinforced skepticism about European involvement, saying: “Europe is not going to be able to help in this case.” He added that his administration had held talks with Iran and that he believed Iran was “just weeks or months away from securing a weapon.”
Trump also said that the two-week deadline he has set for making a decision on U.S. military involvement in Iran is the “maximum” amount of time he will wait and that he could make the decision even sooner. “I’m giving them a period of time. We’ll see how long that period lasts. But I’m giving them a period of time, and I would say two weeks would be the maximum,” Trump told reporters in New Jersey.
It is the first time the president has publicly commented on the self-imposed deadline that his press secretary read out during a press briefing yesterday, setting it up as a window for a diplomatic solution. However, Trump suggested that he is not considering the use of US ground troops as he weighs an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. “I’m not going to talk about ground troops. The last thing you want is ground troops,” he said when asked if that was a possibility.
He also seemed to suggest that he does not believe Israel has the capacity to destroy all of Iran's nuclear facilities on its own: "They really have a very limited capacity. They can penetrate a small part, but they can't go very deep. They don't have that capacity. And we'll see what happens. It may not be necessary."
