The US Department of Justice released its latest and largest batch of documents on Jeffrey Epstein on Tuesday.
Over 11,000 documents are part of a series of information releases that began last Friday, according to the deadline set by a new law that requires the publication of all investigative files on the late financier and pedophile.
Many of the documents released Tuesday are redacted, with names and information blacked out, including the names of people the FBI appears to mention as possible collaborators in the Epstein case.
The Justice Department is facing criticism from lawmakers of both parties over the extent of the redactions, which the law clearly states can only be made to protect the identity of victims or active criminal investigations.
Trump is mentioned more in new documents
President Donald Trump's name appears more prominently in these documents than in previous releases. Many are media reports that mention him, but a separate email from a federal prosecutor shows that Trump traveled on Epstein's private jet. The Justice Department said some of the files contain "false and sensational claims" about Trump.
The mention of a person in the Epstein documents does not imply any illegal action was taken. The BBC has sought comment from the people named in its reporting.
Email between "A" and Ghislaine Maxwell about "girls"
Among the thousands of pages released, one email from 2001 from a person identified as “A” stands out. The message, addressed to Epstein’s associate and close friend Ghislaine Maxwell, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 for sex trafficking minors, says: “Have you found a new girlfriend who is unsuitable for me?”
Maxwell replies: "I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the truth must be told. I've only been able to find suitable friends."
The email was sent from the address [email protected], with the sender name “The Invisible Man.” An image from an earlier release of the documents showed another similar email, recorded on Epstein’s phone with the contact “Duke of York.” Another email exchange between Maxwell and “The Invisible Man” discussed a trip to Peru.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor recently lost the use of the title Duke of York following scrutiny of his links to Epstein, denying any wrongdoing.
FBI lists 10 possible Epstein associates
Among the documents released are emails from the FBI in 2019 that mention 10 possible associates of Epstein. Six of them had received subpoenas to appear in court, while the other four had not yet been notified, including a "wealthy businessman in Ohio."
Another email to the FBI in New York mentions several names, most of which have been redacted. Only two names are not redacted: Maxwell and Wexner, the former CEO of Victoria's Secret, who had public ties to Epstein. Wexner's lawyers said he was not an accomplice or subject of the investigation, and had cooperated fully by providing information about Epstein.
Lawmakers from both parties have called for more transparency, noting that potential accomplices are key issues for Epstein's victims and for investigators.
Fake letter to Larry Nassar
A handwritten letter converted into published documents was said to have been written by Epstein to Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics doctor.
The Justice Department immediately called it a forgery, citing irregularities in the writing and address. The letter was sent on August 13, 2019, three days after Epstein's death.
Trump's trips on Epstein's private jet
A federal prosecutor's email shows that Trump traveled on Epstein's private jet at least eight times between 1993 and 1996. Ghislaine Maxwell was present on at least four flights, and Trump also traveled with Marla Maples, daughter Tiffany, and son Eric.
The Justice Department stressed that many of the references to Trump in the new documents are simply from media reports and do not imply any wrongdoing. Trump has denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein.
Fake Epstein video
Also included in the leaked documents was a fake video showing a figure resembling Epstein in a cell. The video, created with 3D graphics and uploaded to YouTube in October 2020, is not real.
There is no recording from Epstein's cell on the day of his death. The inclusion of this video demonstrates the public's interest in learning more about Epstein's life and death.
