United States President Donald Trump has once again mocked French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting with Republican supporters in Florida, criticizing him for drug pricing policies in Europe.
During his speech, Trump recounted a phone conversation he said he had with Macron regarding the large difference in drug prices between the United States and European countries.
" I called France and said, 'Emmanuel, you have to make a reasonable deal for your good friends in America. You pay a very small percentage for the drugs, while we pay a lot more,' " Trump said.
According to him, Macron replied that he could not change the situation. " He said, 'No, no Donald, I can't do anything about it.' I said, 'Yes, you can. You can,' " Trump said, imitating the dialogue with the French president.
Trump argued that if prices were equalized, a drug that costs about $130 in the US could be reduced to $20, while in France the price of the same product would increase from $10 to $20 or even $30.
" Imagine, from $130 to $20. But he has to double his price from $10. And they were on top ," Trump said, adding that he had asked Macron to make this change.
The US president's statements were interpreted by the media as another moment of irony towards Macron, while the debate over drug prices and healthcare system costs remains an important topic in American politics.
