Tourists fill Italy's most popular destinations before the start of the summer season
Italy's most popular tourist destinations are facing a large influx of visitors, while the summer season has not yet officially started.
Rome remains one of the most visited cities in the world throughout the year, but images circulating online in recent days show overcrowding in some of the Italian capital's most iconic spots.
One of the most crowded areas is Piazza di Spagna, where large crowds of tourists have blocked the famous steps, while many visitors are unable to even get close to the area.
Similar scenes are reported near the Colosseum, where tourists have formed long lines at ticket counters to enter the historic monument.
Visitors to Rome describe the May holidays as "not for the faint of heart," as large crowds make even a brief visit to attractions like the Trevi Fountain difficult.
A similar situation occurs in southern Italy, in Amalfi and Positano, coastal destinations that attract thousands of tourists during the warm weather months.
In Positano, thousands of visitors are crowding into the town's narrow alleys, causing congestion and discontent among local residents.
" We have reached the limit ," one resident wrote on Facebook, commenting on videos of crowds in Positano. " As citizens, we must lock ourselves inside our homes ."
Another resident said local authorities are tolerating the situation. " The mayors and leaders of the Amalfi Coast like this chaos. Otherwise, they would have taken measures to control mass tourism ," he said.
