As part of the study trip, the conference "Biodiversity and Nature Conservation in the Western Balkans" was held in Prizren. Prizren is located at the southern end of the Sharr Highlands. The Sharr National Park is part of one of the largest protected areas in Europe, which stretches across three countries: Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia.
Vjosa and the international airport of Vlora
The Vjosa River has received extraordinary international attention, as a river that has an extraordinary biodiversity and above all, because it is uninterrupted throughout its flow, from the source to the mouth. There are over 250 species of birds present in Vjosa. Over 150 species are listed in the Berne Convention as protected species and of high conservation interest.
But Aleksandër Trajçe, executive director of the NGO Protection and Conservation of the Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA), tells DW that "it was a big disappointment that in declaring Vjosa a national park, the part of the Vjosa river delta was left out of the national park , as the most biodiverse part of the national park. It is very clear to us that this was done for profit, since the international airport of Vlora is being built in the delta of the Vjosa river since the end of 2021, which is an investment that is not only endangering the ecosystem of the part with the highest biodiversity of Vjosa. This will also interrupt a migratory route that thousands of birds use to migrate from Europe to Africa, the so-called Adriatic flight way. So it is not only the ecosystem of the Vjsosa delta or the nature of Albania that are being damaged,
Trajçe demands that the works for this airport be stopped immediately and that alternative solutions be found for this situation. "That airport will bring irreparable damage to Albania's nature."
Among the topics discussed at the conference was what the media can do to spread and raise awareness about the environment and nature protection in the Western Balkans.
In this panel, Adelheid Feilcke, director of programs for Europe and the Western Balkans at Deutsche Welle, and journalist Behare Bajraktari, head of the ON AIR Radio Kosova program, a program profiled on environmental topics, discussed how the media can support the educational system to achieved success in the causes for a clean natural environment for all./DW
