The body of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad, in the northeast of the country. Khamenei, 86, was killed after joint air strikes hit government facilities in Tehran last Saturday.
Reports indicate that the attacks, carried out by US and Israeli forces, hit the supreme leader's compound in Tehran during an official meeting of Khamenei with his top aides. Iranian authorities later confirmed his death and declared an official 40-day mourning period.
So far, Iranian authorities have not provided detailed details about the burial ceremony, beyond the chosen location of Mashhad, which is considered one of the holiest cities for Shiite Muslims and the birthplace of Khamenei. Traditional funeral ceremonies in Iran often include public tributes and religious prayers before the burial.
