Ukraine "bankrupts" the EU, Von der Leyen asks for help: our budget

The war in Ukraine seems to have emptied the EU's coffers. This is after the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, asked donors for 66 billion euros more for the EU budget.

Due to the difficult economic situation, she presented the proposal for the review of the EU's multi-year budget.

"We are in a completely different context compared to 2020 and these crises have affected our budget, we have exhausted its flexibility. We have had to give new priorities to our funds ", said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

These financings include an aid of 50 billion euros for Ukraine over the next four years.

" We come today with a very targeted and limited proposal for absolute necessity. There are three themes: the first is Ukraine, the second is migration and external challenges, and the third is maintaining our competitiveness ," she added further.

Immigration remains a worrying problem, for which Von der Leyen said that quick answers are needed. Part of the requested funds, exactly 15 billion euros, will be used for countries affected by illegal immigration.
