Ukraine accepts ceasefire plan, Trump enthusiastic: I'm waiting for

US President Donald Trump has reacted after Ukraine approved the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia.

He says the US will meet with Russia later today or tomorrow.

The US president also confirmed that he would invite Volodymyr Zelensky back to the White House, adding that "we want to end the war in Ukraine."

Trump and Zelensky had a tense exchange during the Ukrainian president's recent visit to the White House, after which there were further fears of a cooling of relations between the parties.

However, today's discussions between the US and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia brought the parties back to the table with the aim of establishing peace in the over 3-year-old war.

After the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz told reporters that Kiev had taken concrete positive steps towards peace. They said the ball is now in Russia's court.

Rubio and Waltz said they would send the ceasefire proposal to Russian officials.

"Ukraine has agreed to stop fighting and start talks, and we hope that Moscow will do the same," Secretary Rubio said, citing President Trump's goal of ending the three-year war in Ukraine as quickly as possible.

However, the two American officials did not mention a timeframe for when they would expect a response from the Russian side.

The parties also agreed to finalize an agreement on U.S. access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals, but it was not signed today. Secretary Rubio said that the agreement will now be handled by representatives of the two presidents and that it was not the main issue of the meeting.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the US delegation for the constructive discussions and added that the ceasefire proposal includes not only a halt to air and naval strikes, but also a halt to the entire battlefield. The Ukrainian side went to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with a proposal to stop air strikes in the Black Sea, but after nine hours of negotiations, Kiev and Washington agreed to a 30-day ceasefire.

The parties also agreed on an agreement on rare earth minerals in the Ukrainian subsoil, but it was not signed today. Secretary Rubio said that this agreement will be handled by representatives of the two presidents and that it was not the main issue of the meeting.

The meeting, which began at noon in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, is the first high-level meeting between the two countries after the heated debate that President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last month.
