The Danish Foreign Ministry has confirmed the meeting between the US, Denmark and Greenland. The Danish Foreign Ministry said in a statement that officials from the United States, Denmark and Greenland met on Wednesday to discuss US concerns about security in the Arctic.
"The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs can confirm that a meeting took place today between senior officials from Denmark, Greenland and the United States to discuss how we can address US concerns regarding security in the Arctic, while respecting the Kingdom's red lines ," the ministry said in a statement.
The trilateral meeting comes after President Donald Trump announced last week that he and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had agreed on a "framework" for a deal on Greenland.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced two weeks ago that the two sides would form a working group amid efforts to ease tensions following Trump's threats to use force to invade Greenland. The US president backed away from the threat of force last week.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier Wednesday that technical-level talks would take place. The parties had agreed to form a working group during a visit by the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers earlier this month.
Rubio told lawmakers on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that he thought we had a process that would lead us to a good outcome for everyone.
"Even as I speak to you now, there will be several meetings at a technical level between us and our partners in Greenland and Denmark on this issue ," he noted.
