US President Donald Trump said British troops "were among the greatest fighters" in the Afghan war, a day after UK officials expressed anger at him for saying NATO allied troops stayed "just a little bit away from the front lines" in Afghanistan.
"The great and very brave soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America!" Trump said in a post on his social media on Saturday evening.
He added that “it is a bond too strong to ever be broken. The UK Army, with its incredible heart and spirit, is unmatched (except for the US!).”
Trump's latest comments came after NATO allies strongly opposed his previous comments, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling the characterization of British troops in Afghanistan "offensive and frankly appalling."
Starmer spoke by phone with Trump on Saturday to discuss "the brave and heroic British and American soldiers who fought side by side in Afghanistan," according to a statement from Downing Street.
The leaders also spoke about the importance of the UK-US relationship, as well as the need to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine.
The leaders also discussed "the need to strengthen security in the Arctic."
The past week has seen rising tensions between the US and its NATO allies after Trump threatened several US partners with tariffs over Greenland. The threat was eventually withdrawn after a deal was reached giving the US access to the island.
