Former US President Donald Trump has stated that Iran wants a meeting with him and that "I can do that," as he prepares to hold an emergency "Situation Room" meeting on the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the Israeli attacks on Iran had been “devastating.” “It’s a terrible thing,” he added. “I’m sorry to see all that death, so much death and destruction.”
Trump said Israel was making good progress in its goal of dismantling Iran's nuclear capabilities and added that, according to him, Tehran was only weeks away from building a nuclear weapon before the attack was launched.
He added that he has "some ideas about what to do," but prefers "to make the final decision a second before the moment comes."
Regarding Iran, Trump said: "They should have accepted the deal. I had a great deal for them... in the end they decided not to accept it, and now they regret it."
He stated that Iranian representatives "want to meet" and repeated his claim that they "want to come to the White House."
It is not the first time Trump has claimed that Iran is seeking a meeting. Previously, the Iranian regime has dismissed this as a lie, posting on social media: “No Iranian official has asked to bow at the gates of the White House.”
When asked if regime change could happen in Iran, Trump replied: "Sure. Anything can happen, right?"
He concluded by saying that his supporters "do not want to see Iran get a nuclear weapon."
Trump said he has "ideas on what to do," but added: "I like to make a final decision a second before the time comes."
