Reactions in Europe have not been slow to come after Donald Trump's provocative statements about imposing punitive tariffs on eight European countries as a means of pressure for the "purchase agreement" of Greenland from the United States.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reacted sharply, considering this approach a violation of the fundamental principles of international law.
" Territorial integrity and sovereignty are pillars of the international order. They are essential for Europe and for the international community as a whole ," she wrote in an official post.
Von der Leyen stressed that the European Union stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland, emphasizing the need for diplomatic dialogue and not economic pressure.
" Dialogue remains essential and we are committed to building on the process started last week between the Kingdom of Denmark and the US ," she added, warning that the proposed tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and could trigger a dangerous downward spiral.
Along the same lines, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, reacted publicly by categorically rejecting the idea of American intervention in the status of Greenland.
" Our position is very clear: Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is an exclusive matter for Greenlanders and Danes ," Starmer said.
He added that security in the Arctic region is an issue of strategic importance for all of NATO, and allies must stand united to face challenges, including the growing threat from Russia.
