United States President Donald Trump has officially called for the end of the regime of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has led Iran for 37 years. In an interview with Politico, Trump declared: “ The time has come for Iran to seek new leadership .”
The statement comes at a time when, although widespread protests against the regime appear to have subsided, after a wave of violent clashes, thousands of protesters have been killed over the past three weeks. The events have prompted Trump to repeatedly threaten military intervention.
On Tuesday, Trump encouraged Iranians to continue the protests and “occupy the institutions,” saying that “help is on the way.” But the next day, he changed his tone, stating that he had been informed that the mass executions had stopped.
" The best decision the regime ever made was not to execute over 800 people two days ago ," Trump said on Saturday, when asked about the possibility of a US military intervention in Iran.
The US president's comments came after Khamenei publicly accused him on Twitter of being responsible for the deaths and damage caused in Iran during the protests.
" We hold the American president guilty for the victims, damages and insults to the Iranian nation ," Khamenei wrote.
In another post, Khamenei accused Trump of misrepresenting violent groups as the voices of the Iranian people, calling it "an unacceptable slander."
Trump responded by accusing the Iranian leadership of remaining in power only through repression and violence: " What he is guilty of, as the leader of a country, is the complete destruction of the state and the use of violence on levels that we have not seen before ."
He further added: “ For a state to function, even at that low level, leaders must focus on good governance, as I do in the United States, and not on killing thousands of people to maintain control .”
Trump stressed that true leadership is based on respect, not fear and death, continuing with a personal attack on Khamenei: " This is a sick man who needs to learn how to govern properly and stop killing people. His country is the worst place in the world to live because of his failed leadership ."
