Details from the secret base the US uses to guard Israel...
Area 512 is located only about thirty kilometers from the Gaza Strip. The code acronym identifies a "secret" base, built by the US together with the Israelis since the 2000s.
Built in the Negev desert, it is part of the integrated surveillance network that is supposed to monitor the threat from Iranian missiles. For this reason there is a mobile radar, Patriot and possibly even a Thaad, the most sophisticated system of this category of weapons.
The battery consists of nine truck-mounted launchers, each with eight devices capable of firing projectiles at short, medium and long ranges.
The shield's mission is coordinated by several "stations" scattered across the Middle East, a network developed following moves by Tehran, which is committed to expanding its arsenal.
Antennas that keep track of the movements of the Pasdaran Air Division, the protagonist component of the recent reprisals and support for allied militias also equipped with means to target the Jewish state from afar.
The center in the Negev initially hosted a hundred soldiers, but then, with the works in 2017 and 2023, its capacity was expanded to a thousand men. A real US outpost, with significant infrastructure, on Israeli territory. A clear symbol of close cooperation, a pact destined to grow in moments of crisis like this.
Recent developments in the war have provided two aspects. The anti-missile/drone defense in the October 1st attack neutralized most of the "hits". At the same time – as expected – some devices managed to bypass interception and electronic countermeasures, hitting several air force bases.
Since October 7 of a year ago - the newspaper Haaretz specifies - over 23 thousand shells have been "fired" against Israel, of which 1200 kamikaze drones. The IDF has detained 80%. According to experts, the Israelis should adapt their defense against drones based essentially on radar tracking.
Then there is a third element to consider: missile availability. According to the Financial Times, the Israeli company that makes them has stepped up the pace, but is not sure they will be enough if a protracted duel with Iran and the militants breaks out. A problem that worries the West, with resources absorbed by the conflict in Ukraine, while demand from many countries is high. Tensions along the Korean Peninsula and Beijing's naval encirclement of Taiwan require it to stockpile expensive materials relative to the launch it must stop. In a recent Haaretz article they added that the IDF would impose stricter rules on the use of heavy artillery in order to preserve stocks in depots; firing must be authorized by a higher ranking officer.
