And so it is this spring. Butrint continues to welcome the world with garbage at the door...
Sometime in September last year, I shared a similar video, taken right at the entrance to the Butrint National Park, with several institutions and names that I hoped had some sensitivity to the national heritage. Everyone, without exception, told me that I was right and that it was a national shame that the entrance to the Park was in that condition.
Today, after almost six months and a long winter, I went to Butrint again. The same dramatic situation, the entire town of Ksamil seems to be dumping its garbage at the entrance to Butrint.
Last year, Butrint may have been visited by over 250 thousand visitors, cruise ships, yachts, important groups, “National Geographic” and so on. If you have noticed, these are visits that become part of the tourist propaganda about the wonders of Albanian tourism.
But, beyond the facade, this situation at the entrance to the World Heritage National Park is not just a shame. It is a surrender in the face of the general evil that has gripped the Albanian coast.
Meanwhile, I must say that the "fathers of the nation", who thought that the Albanian people were incompetent, incapable, and even barbaric, gave this park to the Albanian-American Fund for Development for care.
This fund, or bank, (more interested in making money) has in its hands what should have been our national pride, Butrint.
While, according to the Minister of Culture, Mr. Gonxhe, revenues have tripled or quadrupled (a clear indication of what happened to Butrint's money during the periods of the Kumbaro-Margariti ladies), the Park must have collected around 3 million euros.
Imagine now what care this foreign fund, AADF, takes with these millions, which does not have even the slightest sensitivity to resolve the shameful situation at the entrance to the National Park.
Since six months have passed since my public call to resolve this issue, none of the "fathers of the nation" who raised their hand to give Butrint to a foreign fund have done anything. They sleep comfortably and eat with a clear conscience because thanks to them, what should have been the Pride of Children has been reduced to this state.
Meanwhile, no MP from the area raises his voice in Parliament about this great shame. No tourism institution that posts photos and videos of wonderful Albania. No institution that last week posted photos of happy volunteers cleaning everywhere in Albania. And so it is this spring. Butrint continues to welcome the world with garbage at the door.
