That statement by Beleri is a blessing for the Albanian opposition as a whole, not just for the DP.
Today, Sali Berisha looks like he did on day zero. That is, when he was declared "non grata" by the US and then by Great Britain, and there is no international communication channel.
The lobbyists or strategist La Civita have completed their mission and the US has given its position, following the wave of all European leaders and above all the OSCE, for the May 11 elections.
After a defeat, as he himself said he expected, Berisha said he would not leave the leadership of the DP. Something that, like the result that Berisha knew, was expected and known by everyone.
In the Democratic Party, in the concept of a political alliance, not simply the embassy of "Greater Albania", the most important and influential person after Sali Berisha is Fredi Beleri, for whom Berisha, but also Ilir Meta and others invested heavily in the 2023 local elections.
An investment that, in all likelihood – and this is seen in every poll – the PD, PL or all other opposition parties or groups have lost many votes. Starting from the southern areas, but the reality is the same everywhere in the country, especially in the diaspora. In short, the Democratic Party as the largest party, its allies, Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta personally have gained nothing from the pirouette to create a political precedent that would turn into a casus belli between Tirana and Athens.
The only favor that was hoped for was the emergence or breaking of the international siege, which with the help of the DP came more to the fore of Fredi Beleri, who became a Greek MEP, as a result of a cause that was called opposition, than from a battle of his own.
After the Beleri case, Athens turned into a "Jerusalem" for Berisha's group, with the hope that they have a door where he will not only orient them, but also direct them to international tables.
Which in fact, not only in Brussels, but also in Tirana were full of Edi Rama. Well, everything that happened since 2023 is known, and in the May 11 campaign, Fredi Beleri was the most important political man after Sali Berisha in the DP alliance. At every table he was the right wing. A day after the elections, Beleri was the first to demand Sali Berisha's resignation. A position that is not simply that of OMONIA, since he no longer represents it, but of the party of which he is an MEP.
This has a clear and political reason. The political positioning or alignment of the Greek extremist wing in the new line of the Albanian opposition even after the departure of Sali Berisha. But it can also be an important political protection for the doctor; as he can say to his people: if I leave, Beleri will come. In a way, like Rama did in the campaign against the "owl".
It looks like a "Mexican Standoff", a term taken from Sergio Leone's legendary western, but which is actually a "Trojan Horse" in the truest sense of the word.
In fact, politically, Beleri's statement is a blessing for the Albanian opposition as a whole, not just for the DP.
It is a chance to re-dimension politics against this logic imposed by circles connected to Beleri, behaving as a conservative and naturally patriotic right wing. Otherwise, all the political careers of every declared nationalist will be burned one by one, as happened in this campaign with Shpëtim Idrizi.
