From the execution of Skerdilajd Konomi in 2011 to the murder of Astrit Kalasa,

Crime has constantly threatened justice and has occasionally hit its target. But the execution of Judge Astrit Kalaja is the first case to occur within a justice institution. He was killed inside the Court of Appeals, due to his duty.

After the explosive murder of Judge Skerdilajd Konomi in Vlora in 2011 , in the history of the justice system, Astrit Kalaja is the second judge to lose his life in the line of duty. But unlike previous incidents, the perpetrator of the October 6, 2025 incident is now known and has been arrested.

Murders of justice officials have always been considered mafia assassinations and the files have ended up being closed with the acronym “no perpetrator.” The most difficult to solve, assassinations against lawyers, prosecutors and judges, remain the most serious in the eyes of citizens.

Since 1999, five people with direct ties to the country's justice system have been killed in typical mafia-style assassinations that still remain unsolved. A prosecutor's daughter, the president of the Chamber of Advocates, two judges, and a lawyer have all lost their lives in attacks for which no one has yet been arrested.

The attacks were directed at them, but also at their families, as happened to the 21-year-old student Kozeta Hyseni. On February 19, 1999 , she was found murdered in the Student City in Tirana. Kozeta Hyseni, a Vlora native who was continuing her studies in the “Language and Literature” department, was found murdered near the Student City cinema on the morning of February 19, 1999. Hyseni’s murder was described as revenge against her father, since he was the prosecutor of Vlora at the time.

A sensational event shook the capital on the evening of February 21, 1999. One of the most famous lawyers, the president of the Chamber of Advocates, Kleanthi Koçi, was seriously injured after an assassination attempt was organized against him. Doctors gave him hope for life and sent him for treatment in Italy. But after a few minutes of flight, Kleanthi Koçi died of a heart attack on February 28. Before he died, when the police showed him some photographs, the lawyer's response was: I'll show them when I get out of the hospital.

On September 30, 2003 , Genci Sina, the driver of Prosecutor General Theodhori Sollaku, was killed. He was accompanying Sollaku's wife and daughter when, near the Pyramid, a taxi approached his car, a person got out and shot him, leaving him dead. The victim's family stated that Sina had no personal problems, but the incident was a message to the Chief Prosecutor.

The civil magistrate of the Vlora Court, Skerdilajd Konomi, lost his life after an explosion that occurred in his car on September 9, 2011, while the judge was on his way to work. He remained dead, while the main leads of the investigation were the murder in the line of duty and property conflicts. The Serious Crimes Prosecution reopened the investigations in 2013, after it was deemed necessary to reopen the file by re-evaluating the evidence in the file. The execution with explosives in the car, of the Vlora judge, Skerdilajd Konomi, although investigated for a long time, remained without a perpetrator.

The murder of lawyer Ravik Gurra, in a bar in the middle of Elbasan, on the evening of March 22, 2019 , was a strong testimony of how crime strikes with all its severity and how serious it is when it threatens. Lawyers, like prosecutors and judges, are also part of the justice system. But in the last 25 years, the justice system has been attacked from all directions. It has faced accusations, threats, but certain people, part of it, have also been the object of mafia assassinations.

On November 1, 2019 , Andi Maloku, the driver of prosecutor Arjan Ndoja, was killed in an assassination attempt near the Shkozet overpass in Durrës. The investigation into the assassination focused on the attempted murder, due to the duty of prosecutor Arjan Ndoja, who was injured in that incident. However, the Police and the Prosecution did not rule out the possibility that the target of the assassination could also have been Pëllumb Muharremi, who was in the car with him and was injured. /abcnews.al
