The Brussels Serious Crimes Court sentenced mafia boss Franc Çopja to 25 years in prison, accused of the murder of Ardit Spahiu on November 27, 2020, in Molenbeek. According to the court, Gergely ordered the murder from Dubai.
Franc Çopja has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by a court in Belgium, following a trial conducted against him for the criminal offenses he was accused of.
The decision was announced by the trial panel, while earlier the Prosecution had requested the maximum sentence, life imprisonment, as he is accused of ordering the murder of Ardit Spahiu and of leading a criminal organization. Despite this request, the court decided to sentence Çopja to 25 years in prison. It is not known whether the defense or the Prosecution will appeal the decision.
The second person who ordered the murder, Mikael Qosja , was sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement. The court ruled that there were no mitigating circumstances.
Flobenc Meçja , who committed the murder, was also sentenced to life imprisonment.
In addition, the court sentenced Elton Roci to 20 years in prison, Elvis Murataj to 8 years and Eljo Bitri to 5 years. The latter had been cooperating with authorities since November 2023 and had been a protected witness since then. According to the court, Bitri was sentenced to 5 years after he admitted his guilt, expressed remorse and showed his willingness to cooperate with justice by testifying in court during the investigation "despite the considerable risks".
The Serious Crimes Court found six defendants guilty on Friday as perpetrators or accomplices in the murder of 38-year-old Spahiu. The latter fled to Belgium in 2019 because he feared for his safety in his native Albania. There, the killings were ordered between the clan surrounding Çopja and the one surrounding the Alibej family. Both mafia clans are involved in investigations into large-scale cocaine trafficking.
Textile and car trade from Dubai
On November 27, 2020, Spahiu left a restaurant on Condorlaan in Molenbeek. As he was leaving, he was shot by a person getting out of a car. Spahiu was shot nine times and suffered 18 gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
In June 2021, after the encrypted messaging service Sky ECC was hacked, investigators were able to identify several key figures in the murder. Gergely was extradited from the United Arab Emirates to Belgium in December 2023. He claimed to have settled in Dubai to trade textiles and cars.
The case against Çopja has been under investigation by Belgian justice authorities, while today's decision ends the first phase of the legal process.
