Footage of the arrest of the much-wanted Gjovalin Lesi is published, how he used

The Italian police have provided details of the arrest of the much-wanted Albanian Gjovalin Lesi on April 3.

In Mantera, Italy, the police completed a detailed activity developed in cooperation with the International Police Cooperation Service and the Office of the Security Expert at the Italian Embassy in Albania, Interpol Tirana.

The Albanian Criminal Police Department arrested Gjovalin Lesi, born on 29.03.1969 in Rubik/Mirditë, Albania. The investigation showed that the fugitive had taken the identity of his brother (who suffers from a disability) and had then found refuge in Italy since 2003.

He was declared an international wanted man after the Mirdita court sentenced him to life imprisonment for killing his brother-in-law and sister with a Kalashnikov after a conflict for weak motives.

Since then, he had never been to Albania, but he did not work in Italy as a laborer. The police team, informed by the officers of the International Police Cooperation Service about the possible presence of the wanted person and about the new details obtained over time, has carried out intensive surveillance activities in order to find the dangerous Albanian fugitive.

The described operation represents a tangible example of excellent international police cooperation between the Italian and Albanian Public Security Departments. The Albania/Italy information exchange was managed by the "Fugitives" Section of the 2nd Division Interpol - SCIP of the Central Directorate of the Criminal Police and included a series of complex activities aimed at the full identification of the subject.

The fugitive, tracked to his home by Police Squad personnel, was then sent to Matera prison, at the disposal of the Court of Appeal of Potenza, for the subsequent stages in connection with the extradition to Albania, in which he was wanted since 1998, as the author of the murder of two of his compatriots, committed with the use of a firearm, a crime for which the Albanian judicial authority had given a definitive sentence of life imprisonment.

The Italian police have published footage of the arrest of 55-year-old Gjovalin Lesi.
