Ilir Beqaraj has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal against the decision of the First Instance Court in Tirana, which sentenced him to 24 years in prison for the murder of Gentian Bejtje, an event that occurred on March 15 of last year in Larushk, Fushë-Krujë.
The case against him was reviewed using a summary trial procedure, which resulted in the sentence being reduced to 16 years in prison.
Beqaraj's lawyers are seeking a declaration of innocence, as well as the retrial of the case, claiming that the process was accompanied by serious procedural violations and an incomplete investigation.
According to the investigation file, armed men entered the premises of Gentian Bejtje's apartment after overcoming the external fence and fired at him, causing his immediate death. A few minutes after the assassination, on a secondary road in the village of Hasan in Fushë-Krujë, a Land Rover vehicle, which is suspected to have been used by the perpetrators, was found burned.
The evidence collected shows that Beqaraj, at various times before the incident, was in his vehicle near the victim's apartment. This, according to investigators, was proven through GPS data from the vehicle he rented.
Gentian Bejtja was shot with a hail of bullets and died at the scene. His murder is suspected to be related to several criminal events that occurred in Tirana, Durrës and Fushë-Krujë, where he is thought to have had knowledge or been involved. The victim had previously escaped several assassination attempts, while on July 4, 2023, in an attack on his apartment, his brother-in-law was killed.
