After 27 years, a long chapter of crime has come to an end, related to a murder that occurred in the Caserta area, specifically in Cesa, Italy.
Two Albanian cousins, aged 50 and 47, were arrested in Albania and transferred to Italy, where they will face charges of murder and attempted murder.
The two landed this morning at Rome's Fiumicino Airport, accompanied by agents of the International Police Cooperation Service and were then taken to prison with the support of the Border Police.
The arrest is the result of a complex investigative effort that lasted approximately a year, carried out by the Caserta Flying Squad, the Central Operations Service of the State Police and international cooperation agencies, under the coordination of the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office - Crime Enforcement Office.
The two Albanians had been missing since 1999, when they were accused of a violent ambush in Cesa, Naples. In that case, two compatriots were attacked in the city center with sticks and knives: one was killed, while the other was seriously injured.
The attack was allegedly caused by disputes over the division of proceeds from illegal activities.
Immediately after the crime, the two fled quickly, managing to disappear and finding refuge in Albania, where they lived for years using false identities.
The investigations, also coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, allowed them to be located in Albanian territory, where they were identified and arrested thanks to the cooperation with local authorities, in particular the Albanian Criminal Police Department and the Security Expert's Office, Italian media inform.
The operation is part of the State Police's "Wanted 2025" project, which aims to capture long-term fugitives.
This result confirms the effectiveness of international cooperation in combating the most serious crimes and tracking down perpetrators, even after many years.
