It is not known whether this indicates a lack of interest on the part of the branch leaders or is related to their distrust of a process that was also applied in 2023 to select mayoral candidates, but there were many suspicions of interference in the result.
The Democratic Party seems to be moving towards a primary process for the election of candidates for deputies, while the modalities have not yet been determined. Democratic leader Sali Berisha stated that it is up to the National Council to determine the rules, while the entire process has created debates in the DP, especially regarding the fear that divisions among the Democrats could deepen.
In the first instruction distributed to DP branches, the Chairmen and Secretaries were asked to resign from their party functions if they were to enter the primary race as candidates for MP.
Out of 72 branches, only 9 of the chairmen have resigned, including 3 heads of important branches such as Elbasan, Durrës and Lezha.
But in relation to the total number of chairmen that this party has throughout the country, only 1 in 8 chairmen has resigned, a very low figure, considering the fact that this is a process that could pave the way for a local politician to enter the Assembly.
And referring to the figures, it seems that the entire process is failing, at least referring to the branch presidents.
It is not known whether this indicates a lack of interest on the part of the branch leaders or is related to their distrust of a process that was also applied in 2023 to select mayoral candidates, but there were many suspicions of interference in the result.
If it is a lack of interest, this shows that they, the branch leaders, see it as impossible for the political force they lead at the local level to have a chance of winning on May 11. And if it is distrust, they raise strong questions about a process that, in addition to being considered delayed, does not even have defined rules of the game, even though the country is almost a little more than 3 months before the elections.
The fact is that out of 72 branch heads, only 9 have resigned, despite the fact that the DP headquarters says that several other leaders have also confirmed their resignations, even though they were officially supposed to submit their resignations by January 26, based on the instructions that were sent to them a few days ago.
