Agron Gjekmarkaj has aligned himself with Sali Berisha. Although he was once a critic, it seems that the professor has now become part of the doctor's clan.
In his first interview after winning the mandate on May 11 in Lezha, Agron Gjekmarkaj distances himself from those who think that Sali Berisha should step down after his fatal defeat in these elections.
" I think Albania suffered a loss. Democratic standards suffered a loss. The DP fought to prevent this from happening so that Albania would change. Sali Berisha has no reason to resign in terms of the conditions in which the country finds itself because he faced a farce because he gave his all. The DP did everything. Now it is the turn of society to do its part. The socialists are demanding Berisha's resignation. The democrats are not demanding it. People close to the government are demanding it. Society is not demanding it. So Sali Berisha is within his right to lead the opposition and I think he will do this job well ," Gjekmarkaj tells " Top Channel ".
But while within the DP there has begun a competition within itself for preferential votes in the May 11 elections, Agron Gjekmarkaj supports the demands of his Democratic colleagues for a vote recount.
" I think it is everyone's right to demand transparency. Transparency can be accompanied by debates, it is the most normal thing. The DP is a party of debate and space. It is part of everyone's rights and they use their rights as they think is best because the cult of the sanctity of the individual in the DP is very strong ," he adds.
In this interview, Mr. Gjekmarkaj, who emerged as the only winner as the district leader for the DP, shows how he will use the mandate he won in Lezha: " We have received a vote of confidence to protect free voting everywhere in Albania. We have a trust from society, I think, that we must follow as the opposition to dismantle what was seen from all over the world, who had eyes to see and ears to hear about what we consider an electoral farce because a society that wanders around farces is not a free society, it is not a democratic society. And probably this mission is as difficult and sacred as the DP has it. This will be our mission in September ."
Agron Gjekmarkaj hints that he is not in favor of an aggressive relationship in the new September Parliament.
" We will use every space of freedom that is still left in this country, in this society in these institutions. We will use every international institution and space and we will be in conversation with Albanian society to find the right solutions, the ways out towards a true democracy because today we do not have one ," said Gjekmarkaj, among other things.
