The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, during a meeting in Dibër, focused mainly on the economic situation in the country, emphasizing that Albanian citizens face a high cost of living and low income.
According to him, currently in Albania the prices of basic products are higher not only than in the region, but also compared to countries like Greece, Italy and Germany, while salaries and pensions remain among the lowest.
Berisha stated that Albanians are today among the lowest paid in the region, linking this to the economic policies of recent years. He also emphasized that the price of oil in the country ranks among the highest in Europe, directly affecting the increase in costs for citizens and farmers.
In his speech, he compared the current situation with previous years, claiming that in the past salaries in Albania have been more competitive in the region, while today, according to him, the ratio between prices and incomes has deteriorated significantly.
"In 2026, your salaries and pensions and economic assistance are the lowest in the region. Prices are the highest, not in the region, but the prices of basic foods are higher than in Greece, than in Italy, than in Germany," Berisha said.
He added that the lack of subsidies and fiscal policies have further aggravated the economic situation, especially for the agricultural sector.
"If we go back a few years ago, this path that we chose in difficult conditions, this path brought us out with a blank face. This path that we chose, proved to the Albanians and the world that we, the democrats of Albania, defend the truths, sacrifice for the truths. And we did this at a time when we were the most isolated political force on the planet. We did not waver, because we had the deepest conviction that we were defending your interests, the interests of Albanian citizens, we were defending your truths, the truths of Albania.
And in a short span of time, those truths that we defended became defended by the political forces of the center-right and right around the world. In 8 resolutions. Like no other political force. I guarantee you that if we had not stood our ground, even our name would have been forgotten. No one would even remember our name that we existed. But we stood for the great truths of this people, of this country. And today we became the most heard voice. We became the most supported political force.
We faced the most dangerous Albanian and world mafia. Here we are. Undefeated in our mission. Today, awareness of the dramatic developments in Albania is global. It is nationwide. But today more than ever, we are asked to stand, stand, stand. Imagine for a moment. Just the developments from December to today.
The most humiliating developments for a nation. The most shameful, most anti-citizen developments. A deputy prime minister and the prime minister were caught with documents, dozens, hundreds of documents, that in 8 affairs they have looted, abused 1.2 billion euros. And these are only 8 affairs. And don't forget that that black raven of corruption, Lubia, has administered 12 billion euros of your taxes.
How much is 12 billion euros, friends? 12 billion euros is as much as your salaries 12 times greater, greater. They are 12 times the total salaries of Albania. 12 billion euros. I guarantee you that if they were used according to the law, Albanians would have salaries today not 3, but 4 times greater.
Where are the Albanians today? They are the worst paid people. In 2013 we became the best paid people in the region. I don't mean the richest, but the most paid. And this was a truly extraordinary achievement for us, who had been plagued by poverty for centuries. We didn't become rich, damn it.
But at those rates when we were paid more than all the residents of the countries around us, including Bulgaria and Romania, it proved that we had a great future in this country. And that it was achieved, none of you should forget, it was achieved with taxes half of what they are today. With taxes half of what they are today. And now, in 2026, your salaries and pensions and economic assistance are the lowest in the region. Prices are the highest, not in the region, but the prices of basic foods are higher than in Greece, than in Italy, than in Germany.
Oil is among the highest in Europe, among the highest in the world. There is a mechanism to leave the land barren, it increases the price of oil. We do not forget, as I forget the '90s. Kosovo remained barren. It remained barren because Milosevic kept the oil he received for Šumadija and other areas, while he left Kosovo with stratospheric oil prices, in which it was not worth working the land. And this man, at the height of the problem with oil, at a time when every government in Europe, I can tell you this with certainty from a study. Every government in Europe has doubled the aid measures for citizens and farmers for oil.
Germany has doubled, Macedonia has doubled. And Macedonia sells oil for 1500 lek. Not for agriculture, but for the citizens. And this one says I closed it. It doesn't exist in Europe, he told that citizen. There are no more oil subsidies in Europe. This man who day and night only tells lies in front of you," said Berisha.
