On the 35th anniversary of the December '90 student movement, the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, recalled the sacrifice and courage of the young people who paved Albania's path towards democracy and Europe. In a post on the social network Facebook, the President wrote:
"Like today, 35 years ago, in the streets of Tirana the call of idealistic students rang out: 'We love Albania like all of Europe!'. The courage and youth movement of December '90 paved the way for a European Albania. Every step we take on this journey honors the youthful courage that brought down the iron curtain that separated Albania from Europe," writes Begaj.
President Begaj emphasizes that the European aspiration of Albanians is inseparable from the ideals of freedom and democracy of those days.
On December 8, 1990, a group of students and professors from the Universities of Tirana took the decisive step, becoming the initiators of the peaceful protests that led to the overthrow of the communist regime. Organized, they marched from Student City towards the center of Tirana, gathering more and more citizens to their ranks. Within a few hours, the crowd reached about 1,000 participants.
With the symbolic call "We love Albania like all of Europe", the young people demanded political pluralism, European integration and the establishment of Western principles of the rule of law. The Student Movement of 1990 remains the only peaceful movement that radically changed the history of the country.
The protests continued until December 11, when political pluralism was officially confirmed in a meeting with Ramiz Alia. Immediately after this moment, students began organizing for the establishment of the Democratic Party, marking the beginning of a new political era in Albania.
