A strong reaction came after the statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elisa Spiropali, regarding "reciprocity in the treatment of minorities", where Albanians in North Macedonia were mentioned in the same sentence as the Macedonian minority in Albania.
Journalist Dijana Toska has requested immediate clarification from Albanian state institutions, describing this statement as a serious political and historical mistake.
According to her, Albanians in North Macedonia are not a minority, but a state-forming people, with over 30 percent of the population and a constitutional, demographic and historical factor in this country.
"Albanians outside the administrative borders of the Republic of Albania are not toys in the hands of the mother state, but a national trunk that must be supported and protected. This is not a matter of political will, but a constitutional and moral obligation of Albania," says Toska.
The statement emphasizes that Albanians outside the administrative borders of the Republic of Albania are not diplomatic objects, but part of the national core, whom the mother state has a constitutional and moral obligation to protect and support.
The reaction raises two essential questions for the Foreign Ministry:
Was this statement an individual slip or a result of ignorance?
Or does it represent an official change in Albania's foreign policy towards Albanians in North Macedonia?
According to the author, institutional silence in this case would mean acceptance of the relativization of the state-forming status of Albanians, which is considered unacceptable and harmful to the national interest.
"Reciprocity applies between minorities, not between a minority and a state-forming people.
This is the ABC of diplomacy, not a subject for political experiments," she says.
Toska says that Albania does not negotiate with the identity, status and dignity of Albanians, emphasizing that these are not diplomatic issues, but the foundation of the Albanian nation itself.
