Prime Minister Edi Rama's speech at the ceremony for the establishment of the Peace Board in Washington focused on several issues, including the trial of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi.
During his intervention, Rama addressed US President Donald Trump with a direct appeal about the situation of Thaçi, who has been in detention in The Hague for six years.
"Let me very briefly draw your attention to another open conflict, closer to my country, where the leadership of President Trump during his first term, brought Kosovo and Serbia closer than ever to a final peace agreement. The President of Kosovo, who, at that time, was brutally prevented from traveling to the White House to sign that agreement, in the presence of President Trump, and in fact this is what was done by that "sicario" prosecutor, who persecuted President Trump himself and for this became world famous.
Today, the President of Kosovo has spent six years in detention by a special court in The Hague, sponsored by a number of democratic states, some of them present here and who should be ashamed of that kind of international justice.
Just last week, Mr. President, another prosecutor funded by this great country and its taxpayers, requested 45 years in prison for him, a request that sent a shockwave of humiliation throughout a peace-loving country.
And at this point, only a few months stand between a man who rose from resistance to ethnic cleansing to become a peacemaker and a devastating outcome from a court that has so far failed, at every turn, to uphold the standards of democratic justice.
"For God's sake, Mr. President, let's do something before, as you say, very bad things can happen again," Rama said.
The Prime Minister did not mention the prosecutor by name, but "The New York Times" reported that it is Jack Smith, an American federal prosecutor and part of the prosecution team against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selim.
Smith read the indictment against Thaçi while he was the head of the prosecutor's office at the Special Court. In 2023, he took over the investigation into Donald Trump in the classified documents case.
In its reporting, "The New York Times" also clarifies the term used by Rama, "Sicario," writes "The New York Times," which "is a Spanish word and the title of a Hollywood blockbuster, associated with harshness or criminality."
Jack Smith has filed charges against Trump for conspiring against the democratic process, alleging that he and his associates attempted to obstruct the certification of votes and spread false claims of election fraud. In the case of the classified documents, he has stated that Trump withheld highly sensitive materials and obstructed efforts to retrieve them.
The ceremony in Washington was accompanied by statements linking the trials in The Hague to political debates in the US.
