Former prime minister and historical leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano celebrates his birthday today. He was born on September 16, 1952 and grew up on "Hoxha Tahsim" street in Tirana.
Nano is spending difficult days in the hospital, due to health complications in his lungs that started during the Covid-19 period. Since August 29, he has been hospitalized in a private hospital in the capital, but fortunately his life is out of danger.
He suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, otherwise known as COPD.
Fatos Nano has been the prime minister of Albania three times and for 14 years and 1 month the chairman of the Socialist Party. This period also includes the years in prison, when the socialists decided to keep him as chairman and received instructions from the cell for the direction of the party.
He is the first politician who reformed the Labor Party by being elected its chairman as the successor of Ramiz Ali, not only by changing its name from the Albanian Labor Party to the Socialist Party of Albania, but by structuring and directing it with a western democratic concept , while the membership was dominated by the old Bolshevik and Eastern concept.
Fatos Nano is also the first politician of this party who unjustly bore the weight of responsibility for communism, becoming the first socialist to publicly condemn the communist nomenclature and Enver Hoxha's regime and changing the communist mentality in the party.
