Epidemiologist Mereme Sela has spoken about her candidacy for president of the Democratic Party and her experience in the primaries held by this political force in 2025.
Sela stated that she decided to run after the problems she observed in the primary process in the Durrës region. She said that there was uncertainty about membership and representation in the Kruja and Fushë Kruja areas.
She added that after the complaints she filed, she did not receive any response from the party's leadership structures. After that, according to her, she decided to enter the race for the leadership of the DP.
During the interview on "The Unexposed", Sela also argued with references to the party's statute and the Constitution, stating that Sali Berisha's candidacy should not have been allowed according to Article 46 of the DP statute.
She also said that she only met Sali Berisha once, in Fushe Kruja, during a property conflict with a former mayor.

Rakipi: How many years have you been in the DP? Since you love this party and joined?
Sela: I have been in the DP from 2016 to today.
Rakipi: To be honest, we were very surprised that you expressed ambition to run against Berisha. How did you come up with the idea? Who called you?
Sela: Let me clarify some laws related to this. (quotes laws and the Constitution). I am for peace and for democracy.
According to Article 46 of the DP statute, Mr. Berisha's candidacy is not allowed.
Rakipi: I think this article is valid for all people, but not for the doctor, and he has found a way to say there were no free elections.
Sela: I come from a family of landowners, my father has 33 thousand meters of land in Fushë Krujë. Good and valuable land. I live there.
Rakipi: But the arable land there is not of great value, only to plant hashish...
Sela: Did I talk to anyone in the DP?
Rakipi: How did the idea come about?
Sela: I was part of the primaries in Durrës. I saw that people did not know who was a member. It was also problematic for the district, there were leaders, people who were not residents of Kruja or Fushë Kruja. The primaries process was held. Those who know me, the number of votes was high, but when they were counted, there were 43.
Rakipi: So you said you got more.
Sela: I got it somewhere on 247, but they were pre-determined. I'm not for war. I stayed until the end, I made my complaints, but no one called me.
Rakipi: Did you file a complaint there?
Sela: No one called me. Meanwhile, I was informed that there would be an election for leader. When we consult with lawyers, people are also stressed by life's problems, a colleague told me that we are dragging our feet.
I said the main pillars, education, health, family, children, property.
I've heard a lot about the reasons that pushed me to run, including Rama, Berisha, Noka...
Rakipi: Someone from the party could say, if you Mereme were to run, Flamur for example.
Sela: I've known Falmur for years, but that's it, the society remains. Looking at the situation of the SP, beating, bargaining, breaking doors and windows... They don't recognize the elections as a farce, why did they enter Parliament there? Someone who doesn't recognize the elections doesn't enter parliament.
Many of my colleagues at QSUT are like me. I earned a doctorate at the University of Social Sciences, I go to register, and they tell me I have to take it at the Faculty of Medicine. Meanwhile, a doctor, the daughter of a government official, took it.
I am in the process of getting my doctorate. I am an epidemiologist.
Rakipi: If you had joined Rama's left, directly appointed him Minister of Health, in an important position, he would immediately appoint women. In the DP, it is a bit of a male party. You would be luckier.
Sela: I don't regret my conviction.
Rakipi: This party is full of doctors. You, the doctor, Flamur Noka, Tritan Shehu. If you put your hand in there, a doctor comes out. Do you know Berisha, where did you meet for the first time?
Sela: I only met him once in Fushë Krujë. One of the former mayors wanted to take my land. That's the only time I met him.
