Former Foreign Minister Paskal Milo has commented on the recent debates within the Socialist Party, including public clashes and criticism of its leadership, with Elisa Spiropali's 'outbursts' against Prime Minister Rama being the headlines.
Invited to the "Lunch Program" on News24, Milo focused on the transformation that, according to him, the Socialist Party has undergone during the years of Edi Rama's leadership.
He stressed that since 2005, the party has entered a new phase, where its structures and forums have lost their real role in decision-making. According to him, the way of organization has created a model where power is centralized and where the chairman has the main influence in every link of the party and government.
In his analysis, Milo noted that this situation has brought dissatisfaction and internal debates, as the concept of internal democracy, which should be the foundation of any political force, has faded. He also asserted that the responsibility for this situation does not only belong to the party chairman, but also to other leaders. Milo added that the critical voices being heard today, including figures like Elisa Spiropali and others, are not a new phenomenon, but a reflection of long-standing problems within the party, which according to him are only now coming to the surface more openly.
" This is a separate story that has a past. The SP has been transformed during Mr. Rama's leadership. Since 2005 until now, it has been an entire era. The leadership of the SP, or its institutions, have shrunk, they do not have any central role in decision-making, it is clearly displayed, but they have a peripheral role. They have a purely facade role. The absolute power that Mr. Rama has within the SP has dictated such a policy that these institutions where individual members have no role or have a minimal one. This is an obvious way. The SP today is portrayed as a political administrative team of a party-state, which has all the links in its hands and that is where the party leader decides. It may not be an exception, it depends. I do not want to go into details. A way of governance and administration has been created there that leaves room for debate, for complaints because the basic concept of the functioning of a political party, which is internal democracy, has been lost. There are many who I hear who give Mr. Rama the main responsibility for what is happening in the SP, but I partially agree with them. In my opinion, as much as Mr. Rama is responsible for this trajectory of the SP from an open party to a closed one, the others who come around him are also responsible. None of them have had either the courage or the European democratic mindset to speak their mind. Assessing what is happening now in terms of expressing opinions and pointing the finger at the wound of the SP, they have praised the party leader, supported him, and been part of the team that they are complaining about today. At the moment when they lost their position in the government or the political hierarchy of the SP, they have taken the courage to point the finger at the wound. Not that they are not right, but these are old problems in the SP and have not manifested themselves now. Whether it is for Ms. Spiropali or Braçe or other voices that do not speak publicly. We must act calmly and have more wisdom and more collegiality and correct it before it is too late. A mess is starting to unravel, because it cannot be stopped ," he said.
