The port of Porto Romano ignites the war of the great powers: Rama talks about Plan C amid American and German pressure...
BKH enters the 400 million euro tender, while behind the scenes the interests of the US, Germany, Italy, Greece and Saudi capital clash for the strategic port of Durrës.
Edi Rama warned at the SP group meeting that, if the large port project in Porto Romano is blocked, he has not only a plan B, but also a plan C, to get out of the situation.
The statement was made after two sensational developments: the raid by officers of the National Bureau of Investigation, who seized the tender documentation, as well as a verbal protest by the head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Albania, Grant Van Cleve, who asked the prime minister to cancel the tender.
But what happened here and what is hidden behind the scenes?
The large port of Porto Romano, initially allocated with a project worth up to 400 million euros, with potential for future growth, has a very large potential for economic and financial interests.
Therefore, there is a clear interest, also because in addition to commercial vehicles, i.e. containers of civilian goods, NATO military vehicles are also expected to be attached. As is the case with the port of Naples and that of Gioia Tauro in Calabria, which gives these sites great processing and profit power.
Currently, the construction tender has been awarded to a very large and somewhat strange consortium, as three large European corporations have joined forces: the Greek Archirodon Construction , namely its international subsidiary headquartered in the Netherlands; the well-known Belgian corporation DEME Dredging ; and the well-known Venetian corporation Società Italiana Dragaggi SpA.
A complicated "marriage" of interests, which primarily hides an attempt to curry favor from Edi Rama, whether for Mitsotakis' Greeks, for Giorgia Meloni's government, as well as for a Belgian company that is considered close to the influence of the current head of NATO.
This has apparently caused nervousness among at least two major actors: the Americans, who are finally demanding a major economic stake in Tirana through lobbying by the American Chamber of Commerce. They have supported a company with a Dutch flag, but which behind the scenes is linked to important figures of American capitalism.
But besides the Americans, it seems that the Germans have also been dissatisfied, as they have received almost no important contracts in major infrastructure projects in Albania. Although they have lobbied for airports, ports or strategic roads, Berlin has not welcomed this "drought" of contracts.
It is even learned that they have emphasized that Rama's government should be grateful for investments in interconnection networks, as well as in water and sewerage systems in several cities, financed by the German government.
BKH's entry into the port contract appears to be nothing more than an alarm bell rung by the great powers.
So Edi Rama, more than with SPAK, had a message for the Americans and Germans when he declared that he is ready for Plan C, which is actually the scariest part of this political and economic thriller.
According to discussions in diplomatic circles in Tirana, the Greek-Italian-Belgian consortium may simply be a smokescreen to hide the arrival in Durrës of Saudi capital linked to Prince Mohammed bin Salman, along with investors from the Emirates.
A dossier that is likely also related to the projects in Sazan, where interests related to the Trump family are also mentioned behind the scenes.
However, the current configuration of the project has opened up big problems for Edi Rama, as the construction of the large port, according to some Western chancelleries, could significantly increase the economic power and political influence of the prime minister.
Which, according to critics, could push the country towards a long form of centralized power, contested for corruption, where the spaces for the development of a democratic society could increasingly weaken./ Pamphlet
