Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha says that the attack on Iranian Mujahideen in the MEK camp is shameful.
Through a press statement, Berisha said that "the people's mujahedeen were in a camp in Iraq and were the object of attacks, wild and merciless shelling by the Iraqi government", at the moment they were withdrawn to Albania by his government.
Berisha emphasized that the agreement with the USA was accepted based on three conditions:
-First, yes, getting a pilot contingent to see how the system would work and their attitude.
Second, the second request to get them was to be delisted as a terrorist group because they were listed by DASH as a terrorist group.
-Thirdly, that the Mujahideen would come to Albania under the umbrella of the UN.
- We didn't call the UN to help with food, but for the framework of guests' rights,
"The agreement on the bringing to Albania of the people's mujahedin has started its implementation during the previous government.
At that time, the people's mujahideen were in a camp in Iraq and were subject to attacks, wild and merciless shelling by the Iraqi government.
I gave this answer to the State Department's request, during a visit I made to Washington, to receive and shelter the mujahedin in Albania: first, yes, we will take a pilot contingent to see how the system is going and the attitude of theirs.
Second, the second request to get them was to be delisted as a terrorist group because they were listed by DASH as a terrorist group.
The third request was that those in Albania would come under the umbrella of the UN. Now let's dwell a bit on this request, because they should have enjoyed, regardless of the Albanian hospitality, all the rights of refugee people, defined by international conventions and their protection. The US authorities have accepted these requests.
Now, during the period we negotiated and brought them, the setting up of a camp was not foreseen. Our alternative was renting apartments in different areas of Tirana and of course assistance for their normal life as guests. We did not call the UN to help with food, but for the framework of their rights.
Undoubtedly, the other request was that no activity could be carried out from the territory of Albania to the detriment of another country. They had this label as a terrorist group and we could not accept acts, armed actions, initiated from the territory of Albania, to be carried out by the group of the people's mujahedin.
These were the requirements. The first group arrived, some 220 people. Later, the government took another 2700 or 2800 more. If I'm not mistaken, they bought the land in Manez, Edi Rama signed the construction permit and their camp," said Berisha.
