From changes to the statute to the election of the National Council and messages
DP Assembly

The icing on the cake are the candidates for the National Council of the Democratic Party, where the drafters have taken care not to forget names that have once served in leadership positions, but who have also shown loyalty to the democratic leader Sali Berisha.

The National Assembly of the Democratic Party of Albania, which began its work just before noon, is voting for the new members of the National Council, while the list of candidates includes about 400 names from which the winners will be selected. 1400 delegates were summoned to the Assembly, who formally approved the 8 changes to the statute of the Democratic Party by open voting, while the culmination of the work is the election of the members of the National Council.

In the first part of the Assembly's proceedings, there were messages given to the Democrats by international allies, mainly EPP deputies, but what attracted attention were those of the German CDU, Chancellor Merz's party. It was precisely the German message that was the clearest regarding developments in the DP, where Peter Beyer emphasized "you have a very important party congress. Make big decisions, elect a new board, a new chairman, a new president. I have some ideas about who it could be, but I will keep my mouth shut" .

Other messages mainly highlighted the role of the Democratic Party and called for the strengthening of this party and its functioning as its sisters in the EPP, the largest political formation in Europe. It seems that the expectations of the DP's allies in Europe are high, so this time the messages were clear, when it came to reform, not just a replacement of names, but a new leadership.

And after speeches by representatives of various parties, part of the EPP, it was Berisha who addressed the delegates with a long message, where he criticized Prime Minister Edi Rama for the dirty game he played against the Democratic Party, at a time when this force was led by Lulzim Basha. Berisha alluded to an attempt to buy the DP, but added that this political force was not for sale.

"He launched an attack to destroy the DP, to turn it into a facade opposition, to buy it. But he was wrong. This party is not for the market, this party is for ideals and values. It is neither bought, nor sold, nor can it ever be defeated,"  Berisha said.

Another message from the Democratic leader was the promise that Edi Rama would be overthrown, after the Democrats had put him in the red circle. Although for months and months, Berisha has been declaring that the main goal is to overthrow Rama as Prime Minister, it seems that the scheme he has chosen is not working, while the Head of Government continues scandal after scandal of the government, even declaring the next victory in the electoral confrontations.

The icing on the cake are the candidates for the National Council of the Democratic Party, where the drafters have taken care not to forget names that once served in leadership positions, but who have also shown loyalty to the democratic leader Sali Berisha. Agron Kuliçaj, former bodyguard of the leader of the Democratic Party when he was in opposition before 2005 and then one of the main leaders of the State Police, in the two mandates that the Government was led by Sali Berisha, is part of the list of candidates for the National Council. Likewise, there was no way to miss Berisha's son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, who will undoubtedly be declared the winner of the highest decision-making forum. Rudina Hajdari, former MP, will not be part of the new National Council, but her brother, Azem Hajdari, the son of the former leader of the student movement, may enter in her place. Also included in the list are the names of Glauk Olldashi and Fiona Nishani, the former son of Sokol Olldashi and the latter, the daughter of former President Bujar Nishani. Also included in the list of candidates is Arkimed Lushaj, known by the stage name 'Stresi', the son of Sali Lushaj, who served as Berisha's bodyguard during his time as President and then in the opposition after 1997.

But it seems that there have also been purges. Well-known and unknown names, willingly or not, have been removed from the highest leadership forum, even though the most important decisions regarding the way the DP functions are made by the Chairman or Presidency. Former MP Aldo Bumçi, Andi Mustafaj, Julian Deda, Voltana Ademi, former mayor of Shkodra, are some of the names that have been 'penalized' or withdrawn, as the DP has entered its 13th year of opposition.
