With a euphoria, as if Trump were legitimizing his government, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that he had received a “personal invitation” from President Donald Trump to represent Albania on the Peace Board, an international organization conceived by him. Prime Minister Rama, this global peacekeeper, raised Albania to an “unimaginable height,” turned it into a country respected worldwide like never before.
If we were to read this news story as Rama writes, we would get the impression that Tirana has returned to the center of American attention. Meanwhile, in reality, this board will have so many names and so little concrete influence that the copy-paste invitations sent by official Washington are reminiscent of the endless decorations that former President Ilir Meta once distributed.
The irony is that this “historic invitation” comes at a time when real Albania-US relations are neither friendly nor glorious as they are portrayed on social media. A few days ago, the US froze visa applications for Albania, a blow that clearly exposed the gap between official propaganda and reality. This part, of course, is missing from the prime minister’s rosy narrative.

And here begins the part that Rama does not say, but who manages to read between the lines knows well that Trump's interest in Albania has nothing to do with any role of Tirana in the world, but with territories, wealth and concrete projects. Sazani, love at first sight of Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner (the latter is also part of the Gaza board, who is surprised by this invitation now?!) represents exactly the Albania that interests a businessman-president like Trump: land, sea, tourist potential and a small state that follows the American line without objections and of course without asking for anything in return.
For Rama, Albania's sovereignty and geopolitical loyalty are increasingly for sale, it is enough for any political relationship to be sold as a personal success. Even this invitation to a peace board Rama treats as a national triumph, even though it is clear that it is an initiative where Albania is one of many names, not a key actor. The Prime Minister speaks of "special respect and appreciation", while the same invitation goes to dozens of other copy-paste leaders.
A pragmatic combination of interests, on one side the pompous projects of Jared Kushner, on the other side Rama poses in photos with Trump, selling Albania with big words as part of world history. When diplomacy is measured more by superlatives than by results, when every random invitation is sold as epochal, we risk no longer distinguishing what is truly national interest and what is simply… another status. / Lapsi
