Prime Minister Edi Rama, at the inauguration ceremony of the European College in Tirana, said that knowledge is the most extraordinary gift that the EU gives to our country.
During his speech, Rama added that the EU is a blessing for our countries because it is the deepest source of knowledge on how to build institutions.
"Who would have ever thought at the time when this pyramid was conceived and built for a completely different purpose that the most hated enemies of the man who was the impetus for this pyramid would one day come and make this conquest. Nobody! On the other hand, who would have thought at the end of last year that the EU would be so quick to move from words to deeds, less than a year and here we are. Yesterday the president of the Commission claimed the opening of applications, today the doors of the representation office are opened and next year people will start their lessons at the College of Europe. Something is happening and it's amazing. But I want to share with you that anecdote of the meeting with a former prime minister of an EU country that was part of the former Soviet Empire. He told me that in my country there are thousands of people, not only from other nationalities, but also fellow nationals who follow us step by step to check what we do in the name of the EU. I told him we are opening the college of Europe, he said 'Oh my God, you are training those people who will follow you to control how things are done'. I said yes. He told me it's like a transparent KGB. You can't play with them.
I must say that the EU is a blessing for our countries because it is the deepest source of knowledge on how to build institutions. After all, our past has been defined by many bad things that were the result of a lack of institutions. Even when some were built, they were built for real. Therefore, building democratic institutions for the first time is something that you cannot do if you do not have the EU to teach you how to do this. Knowledge is the most extraordinary gift that the EU gives us and countries like us. We complain, sometimes we shout, there are moments when we want to give up because it is not easy but it is the only way. I want to thank all those who are present who accompanied us all the way and that we are here today saying something essential, which is important for us in the Balkans to learn. The quality of life is not determined by how much we agree, but how we disagree with each other. One of the lessons of the EU is that we agree to disagree on things to move forward on many other things, to find a way forward.
I want to thank those who are here because your physical presence and spending this whole day with us is a gift of the heart, it is a gift that we Albanians value very much because we were isolated from the world for centuries and never had the opportunity to choose that who we wanted to be with. The side from which we lined up has always been imposed and for the first time we had a free election and it was excellent and truly to the credit of the Albanian people, that the first free and best election. With EU always, we are with you whatever you do. We will never fall in love with you", said Rama.
