The leader of the Republican Party, Fatmir Mediu, has spoken about the opposition's proposal to change the electoral system.
A few days ago, it was announced that the DP and small opposition parties have agreed to a national proportional system with open lists and pre-election coalitions.
The media outlet Euronews said the proposal came from Adriatik Lapaj's "Albania Becomes" Movement party. He stressed that this is a proposal that has been on the table for a long time and is a welcome one.
" It is good to work on the draft now that it is time to make the final draft with concrete proposals that can come from all parties. To make the draft even better, but also to take into consideration some concerns."
Regarding this proposal that has been made now, I am making it public. That is, Mr. Lapaj's party has made such a proposal. He made this proposal by negotiating with the Forum for Dialogue, Mr. Ermal Hasimja, and this has been discussed. Then also with us as a parliamentary political party and we have said that this is a proposal that has been on the table for a long time and it is a welcome proposal.
The discussion that has been held for the first time absolutely on our side does not have any kind of position to have 100 deputies and for me it is crazy to say that we are changing, meaning if we change to have 100 deputies.
The reason the idea of 100 deputies is being put forward is that the Assembly is wasting money, because the number of Albanian citizens has decreased. At a time when we have given the right to the diaspora to vote, we must also find the opportunity for the diaspora to be represented.
So 140 MPs in a country like Albania where we claim to increase the number of voters, let's say we come to Hungary's meal where 80% vote. 140 smart men and women, young and young, that this country has to take on to make a Parliament and have it functional ," he said, among other things.
