Rama: Every law coming from the EU is not discussed, but must be approved
Edi Rama

After a meeting lasting several hours with the Socialist Party group, Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke about Albania's negotiation process with the European Union.

Rama stated that laws related to the European integration process should not be discussed in Parliament, but rather approved, as they are part of the obligations that Albania has assumed in negotiations with the European Union.

The head of government emphasized that Albania has the freedom to negotiate with the EU, but not to change or debate the legal drafts that come as part of European law.

According to him, these laws are negotiated with the European Commission, imposed on the government and then presented to Parliament for approval.

"We have had several cases to date where the process of discussing and approving laws related to the EU has been delayed or taken lightly as a process where we have the freedom to intervene according to our opinions. We do not have this freedom, we have the freedom to negotiate with the EU, but not to discuss. Negotiations on a draft that enters the entire broad and complex mechanism of the architecture of European law are negotiated with the commission, imposed on the government and come to parliament. When it comes to parliament, it must be approved, not discussed, in order to enter into the discussion of a law, we must discuss whether we want to enter the EU or not,"  Rama said.

Rama criticized comparisons with other EU countries, emphasizing that Albania cannot seek to have the same standards without still being part of the Union.

"And here I have an example. Many make the mistake that should not be made, they take a draft that comes from the government and refer to other EU countries, and say why should we do it when they don't have it. I am sharing this with you as an experience and I invite you all to be flexible at this point. When you say we want to do it like France, the answer is simple, you have to be France, we didn't ask you, you asked, but we have conditions for you if you want. If you don't want to, you can do it as you want. This doesn't happen only with Albania. The process has brought aggravation of conditions for those who came later", he said.
